Hello. Welcome to my website!
I am running for the California State Assembly to address the problems that are faced by all of us in the 27th Assembly District.
As Mayor of Santa Cruz I strive to embrace the values of equality, fairness and opportunity when making decisions. I try to remember those not in the room. I have learned that when I am true to these progressive values I can serve my community and enact positive change.
During my first election in 2000, I was privileged to receive more votes than any candidate in the city's history. When I ran again four years later, I received more votes still.
We say children are our future, but often those are empty words. We say we believe in progressive values, but too often we settle for the status quo. I will address the challenges of today – universal healthcare, a strong economy, a livable environment, quality education, and access to affordable housing – so that our children can grow into the adults who will solve the challenges of tomorrow.
My mother used to tell me, "If you have something to offer, it's your job to contribute." For the last twenty-five years as a small business owner, advocate, and mayor, I have always tried to answer that call.
I want our voice to be heard in Sacramento and across the state:
- I will work for universal healthcare. Our current system is failing those who are most in need. We can do better.
- I will work to protect our fragile environment and battle against the constant, unrelenting pressure to erode our environmental protections.
- I will work to create sustainable green jobs and affordable housing.
- I will work to ensure that our system of education is worthy of our children. They deserve no less.
I look forward to continuing in the progressive tradition of John Laird and Fred Keeley, and, with your support, will be very proud to serve as your next Assembly member.
Sincerely,

P.S. Many of you have asked about term limits. Under current law John Laird will be termed out of office and this will be an open assembly seat. Should the term limit reform initiative, which I support, pass in February I will end my campaign and support John’s continued good work.
